If there’s one place that has significantly shaped the world of Indian chess, it’s Chennai’s Velammal Matric Higher Secondary School (Mogappair branch).
When Praggnanandhaa was struggling to find sponsors as a newcomer in the chess scene, the Velammal Educational Trust stepped up and provided him with financial support.
And it wasn’t just Praggnanandhaa; players like R Vaishali, D Gukesh, and A Adhiban, along with 17 other Indian Grandmasters, have emerged from this iconic school.
“Chess has always been a part of the city’s culture, and incorporating it into the curriculum has greatly contributed to its growth. Of course, they have a champion like Anand to look up to,” said S Velavan, the chess coordinator at Velammal, in an interview with the Economic Times.
We believe it’s amazing when schools take such initiatives to support sports. Do you think more schools should follow this example?
